The pigments I use to paint the plates contain compounds with lead, which are toxic if inhaled or ingested. However, once fired, they fuse perfectly with the glaze, making them safe for food contact.

Can the plates be washed in a dishwasher?
I recommend gentle washing with liquid detergents.
